Angoon Trading Co.
Angoon, AK
A remote island general store where groceries, hardware, lumber, clothing, gifts, freight service, and espresso all have to fit under one roof.
Angoon Trading Co. serves the Admiralty Island community as far more than a grocery store, combining everyday food with hardware, building supplies, clothing, gifts, freight logistics, and coffee in one independent shop.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Part grocery store, part hardware store, part lumber yard, part freight operation, part clothing-and-gift shop, and part coffee stop.
Its unusual category mix is less novelty than necessity: in a remote Alaska community, one store has evolved to handle an extraordinary range of everyday needs.
Serving Angoon since the 1950s, the store brings together the everyday inventory and practical services that a remote island community needs. Grocery aisles share the operation with hardware, lumber and building supplies, clothing, gifts, freight service, espresso, and Lotus drinks.
