Field notes
Why it belongs
Western souvenir store, candy and pantry stop, apparel and toy shop, free Old West museum, miniature folk-art show and classic roadside attraction.
Its still-active retail operation is inseparable from a stockade-shaped property filled with handcrafted, museum and roadside-attraction elements.
Fort Cody Trading Post has welcomed North Platte travelers since 1963 and has occupied its current Halligan Drive property since 1969. The working retail floor carries western gifts, toys, apparel, books, jewelry, candy and Nebraska souvenirs. Beyond the shop are thousands of hand-carved figures in a narrated Miniature Wild West Show, Old West displays, wagons, a log cabin, a stockade and a towering roadside figure. The museum and attraction elements are part of the same operating trading post rather than separate listings.
