Rabbit Hash General Store

Rabbit Hash, KY

A working Ohio River general store rooted in an 1831 tradition, rebuilt after a devastating fire and still mixing groceries, local handmade goods, antiques and road-trip souvenirs beneath one famously weathered-looking porch.

Rabbit Hash General Store remains a real community store and gathering place, carrying food staples, Kentucky-made household goods, antiques, collectibles, apparel and souvenirs inside its carefully reconstructed landmark building.

Field notes

Why it belongs

Working rural grocery and general store, Kentucky-maker shop, housewares store, antique and collectible shop, souvenir and apparel stop, reconstructed historic landmark, community porch, and home base for a canine-mayor tradition.

Rabbit Hash is simultaneously practical local retail, a carefully rebuilt piece of Kentucky commerce, a community living room and an offbeat civic landmark where the town elects dogs as ceremonial mayors.

Rabbit Hash General Store traces its trading tradition to 1831 and still serves both its small river community and travelers who come specifically to see the place. Inside are food staples, snacks, shirts, hats, postcards, gifts, antiques, collectibles and Kentucky-made pottery, towels, brooms, soaps, kitchen goods and enamelware. A 2016 fire destroyed much of the building, but it reopened in 2017 after a historically sensitive reconstruction using surviving and period materials. The broad porch remains a gathering place, and Rabbit Hash's playful canine-mayor tradition adds another layer without changing the store's everyday retail role.
