Spencer Opal Mines
Spencer, ID
A tiny Idaho opal headquarters where rough stones, polished specimens, silver and gold jewelry, mining supplies, café food, and a working tailings pile let shoppers buy Idaho gems—or dig for their own.
Spencer Opal Mines combines a working opal business with a gem-and-jewelry shop, café and hands-on digging experience at its small Spencer headquarters.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Opal mine headquarters, gemstone shop, jewelry store, lapidary-supply counter, hands-on mining attraction, mineral-specimen store, café, and Gem State roadside destination.
Instead of only buying a polished Idaho opal, visitors can walk outside and search mine material themselves, then return to the shop to see how rough stones become finished jewelry.
Spencer Opal Mines operates its public headquarters from the Opal Country Café and Gift Shop in the tiny community of Spencer. The store sells rough and polished opal, individual stones, custom pieces, silver and gold jewelry, cutting supplies and other regional gemstone specimens. During the 2026 season, visitors can also dig through fresh mine material at the Tailings Pile with help from mining staff. Add the on-site café and the result is a combination gem store, jewelry shop, working-mine visitor center and hands-on roadside attraction.
