Wild Rumpus Books
Minneapolis, MN
A Minneapolis children's bookstore where shelves of picture books, young-adult titles and grown-up reading share the room with a changing menagerie of resident animals — current 2026 reporting confirms cats, chinchillas, birds, a gecko and fish.
Wild Rumpus is a serious independent bookstore built around the idea that a bookshop can also feel like a living storybook habitat.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Children's bookstore, young-adult bookstore, general bookseller, community story-time space and live-animal retail environment.
The merchandise is completely normal bookstore inventory; the resident animals sharing the environment with it are decidedly not.
Wild Rumpus Books operates in Minneapolis's Linden Hills neighborhood as an independent children's and young-adult bookstore with adult titles as well. What separates it from an ordinary bookshop is the physical environment: current June 2026 local reporting confirms resident cats, chinchillas, birds, a crested gecko and fish inside the store. The exact menagerie can change, so this profile does not promise individual animals, fixed numbers, handling or direct interaction.
