Field notes
Why it belongs
Underground warehouse, Christmas outlet, manufacturer sample room, closeout store and cave-complex retail stop.
Shopping for changing Christmas samples inside a working cave-based headquarters is an unusual meeting of wholesale operations, bargain retail and place-driven architecture.
Hanna's Handiworks operates its public Christmas Sample Store inside the company's Space Center Drive headquarters, a commercial cave complex in Lee's Summit. The roughly 4,000-square-foot shop sells samples, closeouts and overstock holiday merchandise, making both the underground setting and changing bargain inventory central to the visit.
