Field notes
Why it belongs
Architectural salvage, industrial antiques, furniture, lighting, hardware, restoration knowledge, and a preserved nineteenth-century gasworks building.
Housewerks is not merely a salvage retailer located in an old building. The dramatic industrial architecture, historic artifacts, workshop capabilities, and one-off inventory combine into a destination that is difficult to classify as either store, showroom, workshop, or museum.
The store occupies the surviving Valve House of an 1885 gasworks complex. Within that industrial setting, Housewerks displays architectural pieces salvaged from Baltimore and Washington buildings alongside vintage lighting, furniture, doors, windows, hardware, kitchen and bath pieces, garden objects, and unusual decorative artifacts. The historic structure and the inventory reinforce one another, making the visit feel like a cross between a salvage showroom, a film set, and an industrial museum.
