Jordan's Furniture — Reading
Reading, MA
A full-scale Reading furniture store where sofas, mattresses and dining sets share the building with giant jellybeans, a two-level indoor ropes course and zip line, restaurants and an 80-by-60-foot IMAX theater seating roughly 500 moviegoers.
Jordan's Furniture in Reading treats furniture shopping as only one part of the building, surrounding its working home-furnishings operation with a genuine ropes-and-zip-line attraction, giant jellybean sculptures, food stops and a commercial IMAX theater.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Furniture store, mattress showroom, home-goods retailer, indoor adventure course, zip-line attraction, family entertainment center, sculpture environment, commercial movie theater and food destination.
Few stores make it possible to buy a sectional, cross a ropes course and watch a first-run movie without leaving the same retail property.
Jordan's Furniture in Reading is a working furniture and mattress store filled with living-room, bedroom, dining, office and home-furnishing merchandise. That ordinary description stops being useful once the rest of the building enters the picture. The Reading property contains It at Beantown, a two-level indoor ropes course with more than 30 activities and a zip line, along with giant jellybean sculptures and a children's course. It also houses a commercial Sunbrella IMAX 3D theater with an 80-by-60-foot screen and seating for roughly 500 people, plus food options. The attractions operate on their own schedules and should not be mistaken for furniture-store amenities that are continuously open, but together they turn an already enormous retail operation into one of Massachusetts' clearest experiential OddStops.
