MEMaine field entry
Liberty Tool Company
Liberty, ME
A three-story Liberty institution where thousands of used, vintage and antique tools dominate the first floor before the building turns into vendor-filled levels of antiques, books, artwork, glassware, vintage clothing, home décor and whatever else has arrived this week.
Liberty Tool Company begins as a serious secondhand tool dealer and gradually transforms, floor by floor, into an antique market, book-and-paper shop, vintage-clothing hunt and general repository of one-of-a-kind things.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Secondhand tool store, woodworking and machinist-tool shop, antique store, multi-vendor market, book-and-paper seller, art market, vintage-clothing shop, home-decor dealer and three-floor treasure hunt.
The first floor could stand alone as a specialty tool business; the two vendor-packed floors above it pull the same building into a much broader and far less classifiable form of retail.
Liberty Tool Company has operated in Liberty since 1976 and remains centered on what its name promises: thousands of used, vintage and antique tools for woodworkers, machinists, blacksmiths, collectors and practical users. But that is mostly the first floor. The second and third floors expand into vendor spaces filled with antiques, glassware, books, magazines, artwork, prints, vintage clothing, home décor, collectibles, pottery, postcards and constantly changing curiosities. The result is a building that begins as a serious tool store and becomes progressively harder to describe the farther upstairs visitors climb.
