Kansas field entry

Old Riverton Store

Riverton, KS

A 1925 Kansas grocery that survived long enough to become a Route 66 landmark, still making deli sandwiches and selling everyday staples while its former living room fills with road-trip books, gifts, souvenirs and nearly a century of roadside history.

Old Riverton Store remains a functioning grocery and deli inside its 1925 Route 66 building, mixing sandwiches and everyday necessities with souvenirs, local goods and a remarkably intact roadside-store experience.

Field notes

Why it belongs

Grocery store, deli, sandwich shop, practical general store, gift shop, Route 66 bookstore and souvenir store, local-handicraft shop, historic landmark, and living roadside attraction.

Unlike a reconstructed museum shop, Riverton still performs its original job while simultaneously serving travelers who come specifically because the store itself has become history.

Old Riverton Store opened in 1925, one year before Route 66 was officially designated, and continues serving customers from the same Kansas building. The modern store still sells groceries and practical necessities and makes deli sandwiches to order, while part of the building now carries Route 66 books, hats, mugs, magnets, collectibles and souvenirs. Its National Register status and preserved historic atmosphere make it a destination, but the most unusual part is that the place never stopped being a real store: local grocery, roadside deli and heritage attraction continue operating together.
