Toadlena Trading Post
Toadlena, NM
A remote Navajo Nation trading post where contemporary Toadlena and Two Grey Hills rugs are still bought and sold alongside a weaving museum that traces generations of local artists, family lineages, historic textiles and the evolution of one of the Southwest's most distinctive weaving traditions.
Toadlena Trading Post remains both a working marketplace for local weaving and a museum/archive devoted to the artists and families who built the Toadlena/Two Grey Hills tradition.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Working historic trading post, direct textile marketplace, regional weaving archive and museum, and living connection to contemporary Toadlena and Two Grey Hills weaving.
Historic working trading post, direct textile marketplace and specialized weaving museum operating together in the community where the art is still produced.
Toadlena Trading Post operates in a remote part of the Navajo Nation northwest of Newcomb, where the business continues to work directly with weavers and their families and to sell Toadlena/Two Grey Hills rugs and tapestries. Inside the same historic destination, the weaving museum documents generations of local artists through textiles, photographs, family histories and exhibitions. The store and museum are related but distinct: contemporary and collectible textiles offered for sale should not be confused with museum pieces, and the weaving itself must be credited to the Diné/Navajo artists who created it. Current Navajo Nation tourism material confirms that the post remains an active trading and cultural destination.
