SDSouth Dakota field entry
Wall Drug Store
Wall, SD
A still-working South Dakota pharmacy that grew into a vast maze of Western wear, jewelry, books, toys, rocks and souvenirs, then added a restaurant, seasonal soda fountain, original-art gallery and a backyard full of giant roadside attractions.
Wall Drug is less a drugstore than an entire retail ecosystem that somehow still contains the operating pharmacy at its core.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Working pharmacy, multi-department retail emporium, bookstore and specialty shops, restaurant, art gallery, soda fountain and roadside attractions under one destination identity.
The operating pharmacy remains at the core of a sprawling destination that mixes useful retail, specialty shopping, food, art and seasonal spectacle under one name.
Wall Drug began as a small pharmacy in 1931 and still operates a weekday pharmacy today, but the business has expanded into one of the country’s strangest retail complexes. Customers move among books, Western apparel, jewelry, toys, rocks, travel supplies and souvenirs before reaching the restaurant, seasonal soda fountain, Western-art collection and Backyard attractions. Wall Drug describes nearly 50,000 square feet of selling space, a restaurant seating more than 500 and an art collection of more than 300 works; those scale claims remain attributed to the business rather than independently certified here.
