Field notes
Why it belongs
Theatrical superhero-supply shop, novelty retailer, hidden-door experience and nonprofit youth writing center.
A working novelty store built around an immersive superhero premise conceals the entrance to a nonprofit youth writing center behind its retail displays.
Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. sells capes, masks, T-shirts, books, toys and comic superhero provisions such as bottled antimatter, invisibility products and other clearly fictional supplies. The retail floor also contains the concealed entrance to 826NYC, a nonprofit youth writing and tutoring center. Purchases support 826NYC's free writing programs, making the storefront's theatrical premise part of a real educational mission. The official shop still describes complimentary cape testing, but availability should be confirmed before making it the purpose of a trip.
