Hasegawa General Store

Hāna, HI

A fourth-generation Hāna general store where groceries, local produce, fishing rods, doorknobs, sunscreen, books, wine, shirts, postcards, wall art, coffee, souvenirs, and whatever else town needs still share the aisles.

Hasegawa General Store preserves the old catch-all meaning of 'general store,' serving Hāna with groceries and produce alongside apparel, fishing gear, books, household objects, wine, souvenirs and famously miscellaneous necessities.

Field notes

Why it belongs

Grocery store, produce market, apparel shop, liquor-and-wine stop, fishing-supply store, bookshop, hardware counter, souvenir store, kitchen-and-home shop, and century-old community institution.

Most modern stores specialize because they can; isolated Hāna historically needed a place that sold almost everything, and Hasegawa still retains that wonderfully unpredictable inventory.

Founded by Shoichi and Saburo Hasegawa in 1910, Hasegawa General Store remains a fourth-generation Hāna family business and one of Maui's true surviving catch-all stores. Its current website lists an assortment that sounds almost fictional: groceries and local produce, shirts and hats, sunscreen, postcards, wine and spirits, fishing rods, books, wall art, cutting boards, bags, balls, souvenirs and even doorknobs. After a 1990 fire destroyed the former store, the business reopened in the old Hāna theater in 1991, where it continues serving both residents and Road to Hāna travelers.
