Hound & Quail
Honolulu, HI
A Honolulu curiosity cabinet where vintage furniture, taxidermy, old books, Hawaiiana, jewelry, ephemera, strange medical objects, global finds, and carefully chosen lifestyle goods occupy one tiny Chinatown shop.
Hound & Quail combines a vintage furniture shop, antique dealer, taxidermy cabinet and lifestyle boutique into a highly edited Honolulu collection of unusual objects gathered from Hawaiʻi and around the world.
Field notes
Why it belongs
Vintage furniture store, antique shop, taxidermy cabinet, old-book dealer, Hawaiiana shop, jewelry boutique, home-goods store, and globally sourced curiosity collection.
The shop is less about sheer volume than improbable juxtaposition: an elegant piece of furniture may share a room with taxidermy, old medical equipment, books, jewelry, and obscure island ephemera.
Hound & Quail began in Honolulu in 2011 as Mark Pei and Travis Flazer's collection of vintage objects and curiosities. The current Nuʻuanu Avenue shop remains deliberately small and highly edited, mixing vintage furniture and home pieces with taxidermy, books, Hawaiiana, ephemera, jewelry, unusual decorative items and lifestyle goods collected locally and around the world. Rather than behaving like a conventional antique store, it feels like a carefully arranged cabinet of curiosities where nearly every object has been chosen because it is unusual enough to start a conversation.
